Chrome OS nears release

Google Chrome OS, simply put

A short & simple guide to Google's new operating system

Who is Chrome OS for?

As Google puts it, Chrome OS is “for people who live on the web.”

Google Chrome OS will be initially available on netbooks. These are small, portable and low-cost computers that people buy primarily for getting online.

Chrome OS will also appeal to those who want stability and security over and above power and the numerous (and often confusing) options offered by ‘traditional’ operating systems.

Profile of the typical Chrome OS user…

  • Online at home, work and any time in-between
  • Web-savvy and happy to use online applications
  • Doesn’t need to run powerful programs
  • Measures a computer’s speed by the time he / she gets things done and not from how fast the hardware claims to be
  • Not technical and / or resentful of computer administration tasks
  • Happy to save money
  • Comfortable hosting files and personal data online

Who isn’t Chrome OS for

People that require powerful PCs to run complicated software will have to wait until internet connections speeds are faster. Obviously, a Google Chrome OS based computer will be pretty much useless without an internet connection. Those who prefer to keep their data offline will probably avoid using online applications and services.
