Chrome OS is not a new idea, by all means. People have been talking such models for many years. So it’s fair to say that the news is ‘big’ not because it’s something new but because Google is behind the project.
The operating system is in the Cloud 1.0
To quote Good OS (gOS)…
Cloud is a web browser plus operating system, enabling the browser to perform everything that the desktop is able to perform. Since Cloud just boots into a web browser, it’s perfect for Netbooks, Mobile Internet Devices, and PCs for pure Internet use.
This is their vision of ‘cloud computing’, where people’s programs and files live and run on the internet.
More information about Cloud 1.0 can be found on the gOS website.
So yes, this is pretty much what Google are promising. It will be interesting to see who releases their operating system first. Good OS seem to have had a head start but Google has the resources…
But it’s good that there are more companies developing similar products. More choice for the consumer is always a good thing.
