Google Chrome OS' desktop - how will it work?

Or rather, how should it work?

This is what users will see when they first boot up their Google Chrome OS computer.

Will it be a web page? iGoogle.com perhaps? Or will it be more like desktops we use today?

Whatever the solution will be Google engineers will have to take into consideration that people have been using desktops for years. Anything too different may cause confusion and risk putting off first-time users. Chrome OS’ desktop will be the first thing users will see when they boot up.

Chrome OS’ desktop should work like a… desktop

I think that it should look and behave just like desktops we know and love:

  • Holding files and shortcuts that we can drag around the place
  • Including a recycle bin
  • It should work offline
  • Ability to change the background picture
  • NOT include adwords

This should be the basic functionality. Advanced users should have the option to customise as much as they want. To build their own version if they want — this would allow brands to create their own versions.

How would you want your Chrome OS’ desktop to work?
